Goose Egg
I survived my first night away from Lexi – uh, it wasn’t that hard. I ended up leaving around 10am on Saturday and by the time I arrived in Palm Desert, everyone was enjoying the fantastic weather outside by the pool, so I threw on my swimsuit, grabbed a margarita and joined them. Yeah, it was rough. After lunch we all headed over to the Well Spa, and I enjoyed a fantastic 60 minute massage. I think the fact that I was away from the baby for the night really helped me to let go during the treatment and not focus on how quickly I have to get home or what I need to get done after she falls asleep. Later that night we headed to The Cork Tree for dinner (got the sea bass, it was the bomb) and we popped some bubbly to toast Erica’s November wedding. After a hefty injection of cabernet we went to Costas for drinks and dancing. I think the best part of the nightclub was that we sprung for table service so we got to sit in the “VIP” area – meaning we had couches and it limited the number of weirdos dancing up on us. For some reason one of the girls awarded me the “Worst Dancer” sticker. Pfft, my sailor dance was off the hook, so she was probably just jealous. Erica weathered all the shots and attention like a champ and I think her hangover the next morning officially marked the evening a “success.”
Brent was fantastic while I was away, and sent me plenty of pictures of the little bear. When he sent me the picture of her all curled up and asleep for the night I just wanted to kiss her sweet face, something I did as soon as I got home around 11am on Sunday. We also had a bit of a mishap on Sunday, when Lexi got an impressive goose egg on her forehead. She was standing and holding onto Brent’s hamper when she slipped off and banged her head on the corner of the laundry room doorway. As soon as Lexi looked up there was already a giant lump on her forehead and it was a nasty shade of purple. I had never seen a bump show up so quickly and in stereotypical first-time parent fashion Brent and I were immediately on the phone with the doctor, who advised us to ice it (SO easy with a 10-month-old!) and assured us that unless she was passing out or throwing up (no and no THANK GOD) there was nothing to worry about.
So now I am super self-conscious about taking my black and blue infant out of the house. She wore a strategicaly-placed sunhat at the park today but when she decided to tear it off and crawl around I just hoped no one looked at her too closely. This has to happen pretty often though with babies learning to walk, right? As Brent said, even if we had thoroughly childproofed the house, it’s not like we would have padded all the doorways as well. That’s just crazy-town. Regardless, I decided to skip the baby & me yoga I was considering for this afternoon and I’m hoping the bruise fades a bit before we visit my old office on Thursday. Otherwise Lexi might just be showing off her football beanie again.
So as you can see, the excitement never ends around here! I think Brent was just happy that Lexi waited until I was home to pick a fight with the doorway (doorway: 1 Bear-o: 0).
